Wrath of the Titans starts ten years after heroic Perseus defeated the Kraken in the mostly forgettable 2010 remake of Clash of the Titans, however, this time the film is bulging at the seams with top notch special effects that never seem to stop or disappoint.
Sam Worthington is back as Perseus and while he did do a fair better job this go around, I still think he was a poor choice for the roll, no matter how hard you try, you just can't seem to see him as a Demi-God.
Liam Neeson on the other hand is always a perfect choice no matter what roll he is cast and as really the lone stand out in Clash of the Titans, he does a fabulous job once again of the God of all Gods Zeus, this time around however, Zeus' own son Ares has teamed up with Hades to capture the mighty Zeus to siphon off his power to bring the mighty Kronos back from the abyss of Tartarus and its up to our hero Perseus to save the day once again, but this time the very existence of all human life lies in the balance for if Kronos is released, the very Earth itself could be destroyed.
While the first film suffered from a plethora of problems ranging from just plain poor writing, a meandering storyline that never seemed to make any sense and a surprising lack of good special effects, Wrath was able to avoid a great deal of the first films problems and stand on its own making the first film irrelevant and even more forgettable.
At just over an hour and a half, Wrath is a roller coaster ride of tense action, breath taking special effects with a dash of storyline and characters you almost want to care for to deliver a pretty darn decent film that is both fun to watch and dazzling to the eyes.
The plot is fairly basic, but clean with no meandering storylines and you can check most of your cheesiness expectations at the door, when I walked of the theater, I really had no idea how much time had passed. The film did not feel like a 99 minute movie at all in part I think to the seemingly never ending yet nicely paced action that is both nerve wracking and satisfying all at the same time.
Also, be on the lookout for an original cast member from the original 1981 Clash of the Titans that makes a very obvious on screen cameo. It's surprising, yet for those of us that are old enough to have seen the 1981 version in theaters with its Ray Harryhausen stop animation effects, it was a welcome nod.
Wrath does make some successful and unsuccessful attempts at humor, but really don't detract from the overall experience.
While the 2010 version of Clash of the Titans seemed to have 3D added as an afterthought, Wrath of the Titans is freaking awesome in 3D and should be nice example of how it's done right and how 3D can make an audience squirm if done right.
Do yourself a favor and see this film in 3D, especially if you have not experienced digital 3D yet.
I have to give Wrath of the Titans a rock solid 3.75 stars out 5, this film is an eye popping, action romp that will leave you a bit breathless, tense and amazed at what 3D special effects can do. Just have fun with it and enjoy the wild ride.
