Variety is reporting that Brian Singer has signed on to do a remake of this hugely popular and successful adaptation of the Thomas Mallory book Le Morte D’Arthur, a book over 500 years old.

Excalibur the John Boorman movie, which for many years has been considered pretty much one of the definitive movie adaptations of King Arthur. The fact that we had Knights all clad in real armor through the 1981 one movie, and a Jewish Merlin, pretty much makes it a somewhat authentic take on the hugely popular legend of King Arthur as told on film.

We shall see if SInger can in fact...Pull the sword from the stone on this one.

Agreed, Boorman's is the best adaptation of the Arthur story (and still one of my favorite films ever). So, why in world does Singer want to try to retell it? Does he want to have the condemnation of critics and fans raining down on him? He must have a masochistic streak.

One really has to wonder what some people think. Singer would have been better off just saying he was going to make a King Arthur film and not even connect it to 'Excalibur'. He must be blind to the heat that so many directors have taken for making sub-standard remakes. He is going to have pull off something spectacular to garner praise for this. (Or maybe he will just pull the "They don't get it" argument when the audience pans it and turn it into an "art film".)

Singer might honestly believe he can do a better job of presenting the Arthurian legend, in which case he's doing the cinematic equivalent of pointing to the outfield wall as he steps up to the plate. More power to him. On the other hand, Superman Returns received mixed reviews and middling box office returns (grossing $391 million worldwide). So, challenging an interpretation as rich in detail as Boorman's could be seen his make-it-or-break-it play.

Even with obligatory close-ups of the fletchings in flight and down the shaft as they zero in on their target??? :P

What a minute.. Didn't we already see that in Robin Hood?

I just can't help but think this will end up with everything that makes movies the giant cliches that they are now.
