We've been talking about this rumored project for quite a while, but as of today it's now officially confirmed. Sony Pictures announces via Entertainment Weekly that The Green Hornet has been greenlit for a summer 2010 release. Actor Seth Rogen is still writing the script with his writing partner Evan Goldberg (the two also wrote Superbad) and will also star as Britt Reid. A director still hasn't been chosen, but it looks like the project is good enough to actually become a summer blockbuster. Back in November, Rogen revealed that they hadn't settled on whether they preferred a more comedic version or not, but that "it's not an origin story," instead "it's more like a regular action movie."

The Green Hornet is currently set for release on June 25th, 2010, which puts it in the running against Marvel's Thor (as previously announced), which hits theaters on June 4th that year. Rogen will play Britt Reid, a millionaire publisher-turned-masked crime fighter. The Green Hornet started as a radio serial in the 1930's before being turned into a comic book, film and TV series by the 1960s. The TV show was notable for the presence of Bruce Lee as sidekick Kato, a kung fu expert with a killer car. The character was created by Fran Striker and George Trendle, who also created The Lone Ranger, another radio character that's being adaptation, too.

Although this may not sound like the most exciting project at first glance, I encourage everyone to give it a chance! Seth Rogen won't be a bad Green Hornet and I've got a good feeling he's put together a screenplay that kicks some modern *** and delivers thrills for fans, too. You can't tell me that Superbad wasn't a great film and I think that proves that both Rogen and Goldberg are capable of bringing something very fresh and original to The Green Hornet, which is why I am actually in full support of this one. Would you rather have the same old action writers working on this or would you rather have the exhilaratingly out-of-the-ordinary Seth Rogen?

Very curious to see how this turns out. Just not sure about Green Hornet. I think he may just get the tag of Batman rip-off.

Update from SCI FI Wire:
12:00 AM, 30-JUNE-08

Seth Rogen told reporters that he and writing partner Evan Goldberg are putting the final touches on a proposed Green Hornet movie and confirmed that he will play the title character.

"I will, yeah," Rogen said in a group interview in Los Angeles over the weekend while promoting his upcoming stoner comedy The Pineapple Express. "Don't say it like that," Rogen added, with his treadmark snicker in response to the reporter’s tone.

Rogen promised that the movie, based on '30s radio serial and subsequent TV series, will be packed with action. But fans of Rogen's Judd Apatow comedies, such as Knocked Up, may be in for a rude awakening if they expect the same brand of lewd humor in The Green Hornet.

"We have not hit many situations where you're like, you know, what would make this scene better? If Kato said c--ksucker? That hasn't come up many times," Rogen joked.

Still, many fans may be left scratching their heads at the notion that the guys who did Superbad are making a Green Hornet movie. Rogen offered this explanation: "To us, it was just this funny notion that, when you say Green Hornet to someone, the first thing they say is, 'Hey, Bruce Lee played Kato in that show.' We really wanted to make this hero sidekick movie. ... For years we'd really been trying to write a movie that was kind of about a hero and his sidekick. When we heard the Green Hornet movie was up for grabs, we thought that could be the perfect way to do this story, because he is the only hero who's sidekick is more known than he is. We thought it would be a good way to tell this relationship story and just do a big crazy action movie."

He expected less trouble getting the action and violence of Green Hornet past the Motion Picture Association of America's ratings board than he's had with Kevin Smith's Zack and Miri Make a $%$*, which was recently tagged with the dreaded NC-17.

"Luckily, the MPAA decided that violence is fine," Rogen said. "When you're doing an action movie, you can really have as much violence as you want. I'd say, action-wise, we've been able to do everything that we could have ever wanted." --Jeff Otto

Well, we will see. I wish them the best of luck. I like how they are approaching it. Focusing on the sidekick rather than the hero. May be an interesting point of view, especially if they do it with a serious tone.

So what ever happened to this project? Goes from finishing up on the final touches of the script and then...?
