Really, like Anthony Hopkins, Ian McKellen, Jodie Foster, Alec Guinness, that sort of great?
Jodie Foster?

She ain't bad, but she's not even in the same ballpark as the others. Now if you'd said Helen Mirren, Meryl Streep or perhaps, at a pinch, Sigourney Weaver....
Well, now I'm asked to back up my opinion on Jodie Foster

, she was amazing in Silence of the Lambs. I've never seen her in a film where she just seemed to just do her standard thing and coast through it (like so many do). Admittedly she tends to do 'Jodie Foster' type roles, but those roles tend to require a wide range of emotions.
Helen Mirren... I've seen her in a number of programmes / films, but I rarely see her do anything other than a standard Helen Mirren template, which usually doesn't ask for much. I've seen a couple of clips of her in 'The Queen' which looked considerably different, so kudos for that. In the film '2010' I felt she did some interesting acting, in terms of a Russian character trying to interpret something not in her native language.
Meryl Streep - I think I've only seen her in two films, so I can't say much about her. I think both were comedies as well

Sigourney Weaver - kind of like Helen Mirren. She's a competent actress, but she goes for roles that are in the same mould as the rest of her stuff.
I would probably peg Judi Dench above Helen Mirren and Sigourney Weaver. Admittedly I'm having difficulty coming up with an actress that I would put in the same ballpark as the male actors I mentioned. Perhaps female actors get typecast much more often?
