I gotta love this (or not). Mine doesn't have that cover and I just bought it a few weeks ago. What a ripoff! I could have just bought the DVD. At least I used a gift card for Best Buy to buy it that I had left over from last Christmas. I'd be really pissed if I had spent actual money!

You do realize that mikeymike was linking to the UK edition's cover art, right?

I am pretty sure I am getting the extended edition of Avatar on Blu-Ray for Christmas and while the film has a standard formula story, it sure is pretty to look at.

I am really looking forward to seeing that run thru the new Blu-Ray player.

It's nice to know that if a film is new enough, it will most likely look perfectly decent on my setup on DVD. I watched Watchmen again last night. It probably does look "that bit sharper" on Blu-ray, but I didn't notice any screen artefacts when I had a good look at one point.

I got Top Gun on blue ray and was blown away by what a fantastic job they did with it. Amazing. I also got The Last Starfighter....very crisp and clean, but it really seems to highlight the poor special effects...

Blu-ray.com and hi-def digest are two great websites to read reviews of blu-rays and hear about how they stack up to their DVD versions. In most cases, they are superior, although a few studios have mauled some otherwise good films by doing poor mastering jobs: Some of the Arnold films received that treatment, as well as From Dusk Till Dawn. In some cases, the source material is so poor that it is unlikely to benefit from remastering. Many 70's and 80's television shows are not likely to be worth a blu-ray transfer, since the "masters" are simply video tape.

Regarding previous posting about grain in the movie 300, note that some films have post-production effects added after shooting that make them look grainy when the source material really is not that rough. Those films can look underwhelming on Blu-ray. Sleepy Hollow is an example that comes to mind. Planet of Terror (Rodriguez's grindhouse film) has the option on the blu-ray to view it with or without the post-production processing, when they added faux film scratches and noise.

Modern movies that have been processed since the advent of Blu-ray look best, as they are often shot digitally and in very high def. Lovingly restored film prints can look very good, too, although some film grain my be apparent. They are getting better about softening it without overprocessing as time goes on.

I've been replacing my own DVD's only if they are non-anamorphic , or if the film is one I really watch a lot. (Long epics that were too big for a single disk on DVD are also good candidates) It is fun seeing old classic movies that I was too young to catch on the big screen in hi-def. Most anamorphic DVD's upsample very well, though, at least on my 46-inch TV.

Also, if you have a good sound system, it can be worth picking up some concerts or musicals on Blu-ray, as the lossless audio is amazing.

I'm just watching The Matrix on DVD on a 1080p screen and the screen artefacts are glaringly obvious. I looked up The Blu-ray version on dvdbeaver.com, and tint issues come in to place again, though I wonder whether many of these are intended by whoever did the remastering:

http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film/DVDCompar ... atrix_.htm

Check out the Morpheus - Smith fight shot. Initially I thought it was a touch of the later Star Trek series where every scene with the Borg had to include a green light background, and in the Matrix's case I wondered whether all the scenes while 'in the matrix' were done with a slight tint to give a suggestion of not being real, but then if you look at the first comparison images of Neo taking the pill, the Blu-ray version doesn't look like that.

Overall the Blu-ray version looks approximately how I would expect a modern DVD movie to look, so I think I'll put it on my "please buy me this as a present" list when people ask. I just hope that the single Blu-ray is of the same quality as the 'blu-ray ultimate collection', which includes two movies which I could have sworn didn't exist :P

- edit - examining one of the blu-ray shots in detail, it looks like there probably is still a bit of noise. Maybe a rental job first? :)

The only problem is that Blu-ray reveals how grainy the movie’s visuals actually are.

Hmm, how about they actually remaster it at some point? The weird thing is that I've already read about this movie on Blu-ray and they've done a lot of work with the tint being wrong in some scenes, and yet they didn't do this.

I think I'll check again on this when Blu-Ray ++HD Exxxxxtreme Edition comes out.
