From SCI FI Wire:
12:00 AM, 30-JANUARY-08

Platinum Dunes partners Michael Bay, Brad Fuller and Andrew Form are set to relaunch the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise for New Line, Variety reported.

The series, which began in 1984 with Wes Craven's first Nightmare on Elm Street film, centers on the iconic, striped-sweater clad killer known as Freddy Krueger, who haunts the dreams of teenagers and kills them in their sleep. Originally played by Robert Englund, Freddy went on to appear in nine films and two TV series in what was New Line’s most lucrative franchise until The Lord of the Rings.

The project is not the first horror series revival for the trio of producers, who are currently preparing to begin shooting new Friday the 13th film in May. That film, from a script by Freddy vs. Jason screenwriters Damian Shannon and Mark Swift, will be directed by Marcus Nispel. Nispel previously worked with Platinum Dunes on the recent remake of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

At Rogue Pictures, the Platinum Dunes team is prepping an exorcism thriller to be directed by David Goyer and a Near Dark remake to be directed by Samuel Bayer. Bay, Fuller and Form are also developing a Universal remake of Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds, with Martin Campbell directing Naomi Watts.

Shaf's take: No! No! No! No! This has "crappy retread" written all over it. Critics panned the remake of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (rated 14% on Rotten Tomatoes) and it sounds like these films will be more of the same. How many lunchtime drinks did it take to greenlight these suckers?

Signs of desperation I think. Scripts already written. No striking writers to deal with. Every studio has shelves full of scripts that have been "rejected" that they are now starting to dust off.
Buckle up. There will more of this ilk in the year to come.

I am pretty sure Nostradamus predicted things like this as the last days of the Earth.
