HDFILMS, the company that reimagined ABC's V will be reimagining Space:1999. Being a huge fan of the original (especially the first season), I am very excited about this. Especially after reading this:
"Space: 2099's goal is not to attempt to re-tell the specific story of Space: 1999. We are not trying to make some "dark and gritty" version of Space: 1999. There is no reason to re-tell the Space: 1999 story since we already have Space: 1999! However, through our new story and presentation, Space: 2099 hopes to re-kindle and remind fans of those memories of a show from 35 years ago, but more importantly help bring back to all science fiction fans that sense of awe, fear and incredible spectacle that is the unknown, unexplored universe. It is important that we endeavor to bring something new and exciting to the table."

To read more go to http://io9.com/5884500/why-space-2099-wont-be-a-dark-and-gritty-reboot-of-space-1999. Doing a Google search for Soace 2099 will also yield a lot of information.

I think that the "sense of awe, fear and incredible spectacle that is the unknown, unexplored universe" is one thing that made Space:1999 special. Unlike Star Trek, they didn't always have nice tidy answers at the end of each episode.

I sure hope this project comes to fruition!

I was not as big of a fan as you of the original, but I will grant you that it had the kernel of a great idea and some plots that were pretty cool. The show was hindered, IMO, maybe by it's floppy science and maybe the cardboard cutout abilities of Barbara Bain.

I'd be pretty interested in seeing what stories could be in told in that universe in today's world.

I loved Space 1999 at the time; I even had a model of an Eagle Lander.

That poster give me nerd wood, I like the new sleeker looking Eagle Lander.

I can’t freaking wait and I must applaud the series creators for not going down the same path that SyFy did with Battelstar and turn it into as the space drama turns.

I have an Eagle sitting on my computer desk! I got it when Ertle re-released the models in 1999. I love the look of the new Eagles and it appears they address a problem of the original in that they wouldn't make a feasible atmospheric craft. The new Eagle is pretty close to how I imagined they would be redesigned.

As for the science, I think that fans of the show tend to overlook the science of the situation and focus on the story being told. Most of the stories of the first season were excellent while many of the second season were just silly. Although one of my favorite episodes of the two year run was from second season called "The Immunity Syndrome". Not surprisingly, it was written by Johnny Byrne who wrote many first season episodes:
A Matter of Life and Death - The Alphans find Dr. Russel's husband on a planet that turns out to be composed of anti-matter.
Another Place, Another Time - The moon goes through a space phenomenon that puts the moon back into orbit on a collision course with another moon and they find their alternate selves on the devastated Earth.
Force of Life - An energy being inhabits an Alphan who wreaks havoc on the base.
Voyager's Return - The Alphans come across the Earth probe Voyage which is being trailed by alien ships intent on destroying the place of origin of the probe.
End of Eternity - The Alphans take in an alien being who turns out to be evil and immortal. Guest star Peter Bowles.
The Mission of the Darians - The Alphans encounter a huge city-sized ship that is nearing the end of its mission and holds a dark secret. Guest star Joan Collins.
The Testament of Arkadia - The moon inexplicably stops in space near a planet that turns out to be the birthplace of mankind.

All those stories were excellent and I hope the new show maintains the same quality of story telling. Sadly, Johnny Byrne passed away so the show can't benefit from his work.

I need to revisit the series. I haven't seen any of it in decades and my judgement on them may be a bit stale.

Johnny Byrne also wrote three second season episodes:
The Metamorpth - This was the second season opener where they find Maya. Guest star Brian Blessed.
The Immunity Syndrome - The Alphans find what appears to be the thing they have been seeking - a planet on which to live. However, things begin to take a turn for the worse when Tony Verdeschi seemingly goes insane, food turns to poison and metals corrode (resulting in a great Eagle crash). Even though an alien being is responsible, it is definitely not a monster. One of the best episodes of the series!
The Dorcons - The Alphans encounter the Dorcons, a powerful race who can live forever by grafting a Pyschon brain stem unto their own. And, of course, they have come for Maya. Thankfully the series ended on this very good episode. Guest star Patrick Troughton was wonderful!

Speaking of guest stars, the series had some notable ones:
Roy Dotrice - Commission Simmonds - Breakaway,Earthbound
Christopher Lee - Captain Zantor - Earthbound
Peter Cushing - Raan - Missing Link
Brian Blessed - Dr. Rowland - Death's Other Dominion and Mentor - The Metamoph
Peter Bowles - Baylor - End of Eternity
Leo McKern - Companion - The Infernal Machine
Joan Collins - Kara - Mission of the Darians
David Prowse - Cloud Creature - The Beta Cloud
Patrick Troughton - Aarchon - The Dorcons

Not a bad list of guest stars!

Should Martin Landau be in the new series? Here's a brief interview.

He seems enthusiastic about the new series but says he won't be in it. I would love to see him make at least a cameo. I think anything beyond a single episode would be too much. Don't get me wrong - I love watching Martin Laundau act! Someone suggested he could be Commander Koenig's father. I like that idea. I was also thinking he could be a visiting dignitary or scientist.

I think it would be great if as many of the old cast members could make cameos as possible. Especially Nick Tate! Seeing Nick flying one of the new Eagles would be great!

If they do get it off the ground, I think it would be a real shame to NOT have him make an appearance. Like you said, a father or scientist, have his picture on a book cover read by one of the cast "Runaway Moon" or something. ;)

Wow!!! Landau is looking old

It would be a crime to not have him make at least a brief appearance in the pilot......at the very minimum.

I know, I just have not seen him in a while and it came as somewhat of a shock.

One of my posts at http://www.space2099theseries.com is featured on the front page (yeah!). I was speculating on what would be a plausible explanation for the moon leaving Earth's orbit. The discussion from the site administrators went towards various nations attempting to get back to the moon and the Russians really, really wanting to. So, the question became why do they want to go back. My answer was this: "I think the Russians want to back to the moon to track down those rock creatures documented from the found footage of Apollo 18! "

I have a question for you guys. Which possibility of the moon leaving Earth's orbit do you like best:
1. A man-made engine that runs amok creating a wormhole.
2. Some found alien technology that somehow takes the moon out of orbit.

I like the man-made wormhole engine. I'd keep the mysterious alien stuff till later. Making an alien force being the whole reason they are lost gives it too much of a Voyager feel.

Can't say I'm enamored of the new Eagles, if the poster art is representative. I think too many CGI nerds are designing spaceships now. Squishing and distorting thoughtful, original designs of old is not creative, and it doesn't make them look any better. I offer the latest McEnterprise as an example.
