Film Synopsis: After experiencing a space warp, Moon Base Alpha explores a nearby planet to search for titanium, needed to repair one of their life-support systems. The exploration ship is captured, and Moon Base Alpha's commander John Koenig (
Martin Landau) agrees to meet with 'Mentor' (
Brian Blessed), the planet Psychon's ruler to negotiate the return of the captured 'Eagle' ship and it's crew. Commander Koenig discovers that Mentor's ultimate goal is to finish the creation of 'Psyche', a living computer which Mentor believes will return his desolate planet back into the lush, vibrant world that it once was. However, this involves draining the minds of intelligent beings into the computer, and then putting their remaining physical bodies to work in the underground mines to process the materials that will create Psyche's corporeal structure.
Intro: Dr's F. and E. are stoked about 'Superbowl Sunday'. They're also showing off their latest invention, the 'No-D glasses' (3-D glasses with one lens removed).
~
(Erhardt): "Wow, I love these glasses! It looks like it was coming right at me!"
(Forrester): "It was. I just threw it right at you, you idiot!"
Joel and the Bots are just waiting to be subjected to this week's "diet of movie-droppings".
Dr's F. and E. compromise on how to watch the 'Big Game' and at the same time, send the 'SOL' this week's experiment.
Host Segments:
Host 1: Crow's barbershop. Joel is in the chair, and Crow is wielding the sharp cutting instruments. Nothing but small talk (just like Andy and Floyd back in Mayberry).
Host 2: After reading Darwin, Servo and Crow try to evolve. Servo attempts to fly with hilarious results. The whole sketch disintegrates as Weinstein, Beaulieu, and Hodgson can't stop giggling when Servo (unintentionally) falls apart. A funny piece of 'live' television.
Host 3: The Bots are bitter when they discover, while figuring Joel's taxes, that he is claiming them as a business expense. A shallow premise for a sketch that really goes nowhere. (The funniest thing is seeing 'prop Servos' head having been reattached by using black electrical tape. Talk about working on the quick!)
End: Joel, Gypsy and Crow are playing football and execute a 'deep out' pattern for a touchdown. The celebration climaxes in their rendition of "We Are the Champions". Everything degenerates from 'tackle' to 'tickle' as the end credits roll.
Items of Note:
~ The 'Crow's Barbershop' sketch will be revisited in
Episode 105 - 'THE CORPSE VANISHES'.
Personal Notes:
~ Another Gerry and Sylvia Anderson creation (except this time, no 'Supermarionettes').
~ The movie is actually two episodes of the "SPACE:1999" television series.
~ The 1989 Superbowl featured the Cincinnati Bengals and the San Francisco 49'ers.
~ Once again, just before 'Host Segment 3', Beaulieu and Weinstein appear (in character) in a commercial for "Pizza and Pasta" (one of the series' first sponsors).
~ I still say that the 'Eagle' is one of the coolest looking spacecraft ever portrayed on screen. (IMHO).
The 'Riffs':
~ (In reference to the 'No-D glasses'):
(Erhardt): "Wow, I can only see
length!"
(Forrester): "Yes, and they're sponsored by the 'American Association of Eye Doctors'... and 'Sandy Duncan'."
~
(Erhardt): "Talk about weak, your ratings couldn't jump start a Yugo!"
~
(Joel): "There's ONE ball of titanium not to be trifled with."
(Servo): "You damn kids, keep your
balls out of my yard!"
Pop culture references ranging from 'Dairy Queen' and 'Mitch Miller' to the television series 'The Prisoner', this installment is flat and average at best.
Rating: 2 "Moon Base Alpha Eagles" out of 5
"Keep Trading the Discs (and Tapes)"
