Film Synopsis: See
'Experiment #K08'
Intro: Crow and Tom are examining the contents of their school 'lunchboxes' that "either their Mom's or their Dad's packed for them". They contain such fare as baloney and cheese on white bread, a chicken leg, peanut butter and gamy horse-meat, a half an apple, a whole bag of barbecue-flavored ram-chips and one of those "jock shakes". ("There's a whole stick of butter in every can!"). Gypsy is on the 'hot lunch' program, so Joel is in the galley making her sloppy joes and tater-tots. Tom gets teased about the "I love you and am so proud of you" note in his lunchbox.
Invention Exchange: The Mads present "racy Rorschach centerfolds". Joel presents the "collapsible trashcan" (a pretty good idea, actually). He also proposes a "collapsible port-a-potty". (
Not a great idea)!
Host Segments:
Host 1: Joel and the Bots sing the "Gamera Theme Song".
(Lyrics):
GAMERA!, GAMERA!!
Gamera is really neat!
Gamera is filled with meat!
We believe in Gamera!
SHELL, TEETH, EYES, FLAMES, CLAWS, BREATH, SCALES. FUN!!!
Dr. Forrester is kind of a jerk,
And Frank is really dumb, too!
We have to take part in these lame experiments,
But do we complain?
No!
No!
YES! (Huh!?)
So, we Hikeeba all over the place,
And talk of a thousand wonderful days.
Gamera is really sweet,
He is full of turtle meat,
Now we have 'commercial sign'!
Host 2: Joel presents his magic act, "a world of bemusement, and child-like wonder", in which he performs the "saw a robot in half" routine. Crow ruins the 'reveal'. 'Nuff said.
Host 3: The 'SOL' presents a "pageant based on a movie character's weak resemblance to a famous Hollywood star. This week's star... Richard Burton!"
End: Joel and the Bots sing the Gamera theme, again. (This time in a fairly racist faux Japanese dialect). Michael Feinstein
(Mike Nelson) performs the Gamera theme for Dr. F. and Frank in the 'Deep 13' piano lounge.
Stinger: (Young Tom): "What a MONSTER!"
Items of Note:
~ Joel does an 'old school' hand slap on the SOL console to enter the theater. What happened to the buttons?
~ In the first segment in the auditorium, Crow's arm falls off and Joel calmly picks it up and reattaches it.
~ Later, when Crow gets obnoxious, Joel rips Crow's arm back off!
~ Crow still has on his shower cap from Host 2 when the trio re-enters the auditorium.
~ This is the film with the famous "Gamera on the high-bar" scene, which is used in the opening sequence of the series.
Personal Notes:
~ The MST3K lunchboxes in the intro are totally cool. (I'd love to find one of those!)
~ Frank has an MST3K lunchbox too!
~ The improvised lyrics to the 'bicycle song' are absolutely hilarious!
~ Young 'Tom' in the film
does look like Richard Burton!
~ Crow does a fantastic Richard Burton impression during Host 3.
~ Mike Nelson is great as Michael Feinstein in the end segment.
The 'Riffs':
~
(Crow): "Well, for now, we're calling it the Sony 'BIGMAN'!"
~
(Joel): "Wow! Gamera is going to need an emissions test, pronto!"
~
(Crow): "Whoa! The turtle is playing chicken!"
(Tom): :No, he just
tastes like chicken!"
~
(Tom): "Well, suddenly,
I have to go to the bathroom!"
(Joel): "Hey, you're a robot!"
(Tom): "Well, you know... all the water...!"
~
(Joel): "Like a good neighbor, Gamera is there!"
~ Pop culture references ranging from Swamp Thing, Cool Hand Luke and Marvin Gaye to the rock group Queen, Chicago Cutlery, Vidal Sassoon and State Farm Insurance. Consistently funny and another strong outing. Each episode seems to just keep getting better at this point.
Rating: 3-1/2 "Scotch drinking-Welshman looking,child-actors" out of 5!
