The venture known as Planetary Resources eventually plans to go asteroid mining — but the first step in the billionaire-backed business plan is to launch an orbital fleet of "personal space telescopes" capable of looking out into the heavens or back down on Earth.

Glad people are talking about it but we are technologically far from being able to pull anything like this off and make it worth while. Sure there are trillions of dollars out there in raw materials, but it might take trillions of dollars to get to it and bring it back.

I don't think that fact is necessarily lost on anyone involved but I do think they forget about it sometimes when they get excited. ;)

I could be very wrong on this, but the last thing I heard (not long ago...) was that the costs were not the issue, the technology and license (launching into space...) was the hurdle...

But apparently given the "right" asteroid (Ni - Nickel rich as the example given), there is HUGE profits to be made...
