Beautiful scenery. Love the water fall. Almost any picture can look good with that kind of back drop.

Macro shot of a ball bearing that was sitting on my keyboard, used my sigma flash behind it to bounce light into the room.

Just took possession of a nice Canon 350D with a 18-55 kit lens and a 70-300 Sigma Macro lens. Haven't really got a clue what I am doing yet as this is my first venture away from point and shoot. My last camera was a 3 megapixel Olympus

Anyway, I have been playing around recently and here's one I quite like...

thats quite nice digger :D.

So how are you finding the DSLR?? I find it seems to take more thought to get as good a picture as a point and shoot but the rewards when you do get it right are worth it :D. More creative power and more fun imho.

Thanks matey.

I just got it 3 days ago so I really haven't had time to learn enough about it to play with manual settings. The most I have done is change from full auto to macro :p

But yeah, I have really enjoyed the first couple of days using it and I find myself looking for an opportunity to take a pic, which is something I never would have done before.

As part of the deal I got 2 photography books, 1 just for my camera and the other to teach techniques, so I intend to spend the next couple of weeks reading a lot and see if I can begin really getting the best from the camera. I would love to know enough just to grab 1 superb pic every now and then. I doubt i'll ever get too good at it, but time will tell.

Next step I think is to start shooting in RAW. At the moment all my shots have been jpg, but I know that RAW is SO much better.

Any tips, fire away buddy, I know you've been snapping for a lot longer than me.

if you can shoot raw+jpg.

Raw is better but mostly will look flat and stuff compared to a jpg mostly because jpg images come pre tweaked. But raw gives you so much more options around -2 to +2 exposure and you can shift the color balance without realy destroying the image. Jpgs sometimes clip highlight and shadow details to.

One good exsample of raw, say you were shooting outside and the sky was showing as white in your photos you could underexspose the img to get some of the sky detail back and then later when converting the raw you could boost the shadow's and other things to bring the rest of the photo into balance. Some cameras keep ALOT of detail in shadow areas but you can still only do so much without getting noise :).

I guess the best advice tho is to just keep shooting and playing around with settings, if you want to get some of those shots where the background gets blurry (one of the cool things about a dslr) then try and shoot with the lens wide open (lower F numbers ie f1.4), the subject close and longer focal lenths can also help boost the effect.
For exsample the shot i took of the bench in the park.. i used a 50mm prime at f1.7, it gives a nice blurring effect infront and behind the subject (bench).

Cheers matey! Good advice there. Will definately look at going RAW and JPG, that sounds like the best of both worlds.

I have taken some macro shots too that didn't come out too bad and with the background blurred, but I have only just started so there is definately LOADS of room for improvement!

Here's one I took the 1st day I got the camera, I don't think it's too bad for a newbie on day 1...

...i've done nothing to this except resize for the web in Irfanview, it's as it came off the camera. Taken with the Sigma 70-300

pretty nice mate :), pitty the bottom of the flower is out of the frame but other wise a very good shot :). Id myself might have twisted the camera 90o to try capture the length of the flower more but thats just me ;)

I duno if you have heard of the rule of thirds?
Its just some simple rules to help compose a better shot, ofc these are just guidlines and not something you should stick by but can help :).
You can find out more about it here, im actualy a member of that site i find it a good resorce for tips and other such things to :).

Yeah, I know I should have placed the shot better, but it was my 1st day with the camera, I can only get better.

Thanks again for the tip. I had heard of rule of thirds but had no idea what I meant, now I do, cheers =D>

hehe well i still miss frame alot of shots to :P, glad your enjoying the dslr tho :).

Something for you to think about tho, since a DSLR has interchangeable len's you have to be carefull of dust.
To check if you have any the best way i find is to shoot at a blue sky with maby +1EV and set the F number to as high as it will go (ie f22).
After you take the photo, if there is any dust on the sensor it should show very clearly.. a little dust isnt that bad as it wont be visable on normal shooting conditions. To clean it the best thing is to get a rocket blower and just blow air over it.. taking care not to touch the sensor with anything.
