Ridley Scott's sci-fi juices must be flowing again. Now that he has taken on the Alien prequel with the upcoming 3D Fox film Prometheus, he is committing to direct and produce a film that advances his other seminal and groundbreaking science fiction film, Blade Runner.

No word as of yet whether we can expect a sequel, prequel or, dare I say it, remake or whether he will reach out to Harrison Ford.

Here is some excerpts from the official press release.

Quote:
LOS ANGELES, CA, AUGUST 18, 2011—Three-time Oscar-nominated director Ridley Scott is set to helm a follow up to his own ground-breaking 1982 science fiction classic “Blade Runner” for Warner Bros-based financing and production company Alcon Entertainment.

Alcon co-founders and co-Chief Executive Officers Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove will produce with Bud Yorkin and Cynthia Sikes Yorkin, along with Ridley Scott. Frank Giustra and Tim Gamble, CEO’s of Thunderbird Films, will serve as executive producers.

The filmmakers have not yet revealed whether the theatrical project will be a prequel or sequel to the renowned original.

State Kosove and Johnson: “It would be a gross understatement to say that we are elated Ridley Scott will shepherd this iconic story into a new, exciting direction. We are huge fans of Ridley’s and of the original ‘Blade Runner.’ This is once in a lifetime project for us.”

Latest news..

Ridley Scott confirmed with the Wall Street Journal Blog, Speakeasy, that he will, indeed, be helming the sequel to BLADE RUNNER. He told the blog, “I think I’m close to finding a writer that might be able to help me deliver. We’re quite a long way in, actually.”

So this confirms rumors of his directing the sequel, prequel, seprequel...whatever it turns out to be.

You've got to be kidding, right?

They'll go ahead almost no matter how bad the script is.

I said "almost" because I think they'll reject scripts from the guys who write the 'Scary Movie's and that load of other spoofs.

The first twenty seconds illustrates my point quite nicely I think :)

If it sucks, it sucks, but that will be a shame given the basis they have to work with....

I'm hoping that this ends up being just another story in the same universe. I would be very surprised to see any kind of continuation or even a prequel. (and by "surprised" I mean disappointed. :| )

Alcon Entertainment, the producer/financier teaming with director Ridley Scott to return to the world of the 1982 science fiction classic Blade Runner, is adamantly denying a web report claiming original star Harrison Ford is in early talks to return as replicant hunter Rick Deckard. Andrew Kosove, who runs Alcon with Broderick Johnson, said he and his partner couldn’t sit by as the unsubstantiated report spread like wildfire all over the world.

If an aged Harrison returns wouldn't that tie up one of the implied dangling threads from the 1982 movie? If he lived and had grown older for 30+ years then clearly Decker ISN"T a replicant.

Personally I like it better if that question is unanswered. Much as we should never know if Ben Richards was dreaming or not in that other '80s movie.
