Overall, I enjoyed it, but there was something missing. All the actors did a good job, the sort of job you'd expect from them, so no disappointments there. The only thing that was disappointing about the movie is that you expect great things from it largely because of the cast, and while the whole thing was executed pretty well, it wasn't amazing. I would agree with some IMDB reviews in that it became predictable.

If you like that genre, it's definitely worth a watch, IMO.

Personally I cannot believe that it only has a rating of 5.9 on IMDB, because there is some absolute trash between 5 and 6 and it doesn't deserve that. I'd give it between 7.5 and 8.

I haven't gotten around to this one yet but I am interested. I heard they utilized a lot of practical makeup effects rather then the CG stuff. That alone makes me pretty curious to see it.

As far as your criticisms... They sound much like many I've heard. Expect the best and it comes up short.
Knowing this I may be able to enjoy it more but NOT expecting more than what I will be getting.

TBH I wasn't expecting the best when I reached into the supermarket's bargain bucket :) There's a deleted scene that shows that Emily Blunt certainly can pull off some decent acting. I'd have to watch the movie a second time but I'm not sure she was given much of a chance to in the movie itself.

I can't place Emily Blunt off the top of my head in any other movies, but I think I'll keep half an eye out for her in the future.

There's another deleted scene that I'm sure was meant to be an amusing nod to Beauty and the Beast :)

I'm wondering whether I'm entering an odd phase with films. I feel I would rather watch some flawed films that execute some bits really well rather than hope that someone pulls something interesting and different and completely and thoroughly decent all the way through. I'll watch this film again soon I think minus alcohol and any distraction to see if it falls in the same category as 'The Rite' for me.
