Film Synopsis: In the 1980's the U.S. oil supply has all but been depleted, and all automobiles have been impounded. In addition, an unspecified plague has wiped out most of the population. The New Order now rules and the State of California exists as a free republic in opposition to the New Order. Former professional race car driver Franklyn Hart
(Lee Majors), now a spokesman for the New Order Mass Transit Authority finds that after twenty years, he can no longer personally stand the new government's oppression. Frank, along with the aid of a yong computer hacker
(Chris Makepeace) decides to make a run for California in his Porsche, which is hidden beneath his house. However, the New Order will not tolerate this type of anarchy and calls Cpt. J.G. Williams
(Burgess Meredith), a retired Korean War veteran and his Sabre fighter jet back into service to crush Hart's rebellion.
Intro: Dr. F. succeedes in creating 'Cold Fusion'... in Dr. Erhardt's mouth! "Pons and Fleischmann got it wrong!" Dr. F. proclaims. "It has to take place in the human mouth"! With Dr. Erhardt firmly secured to a lab table, Dr. F. pours some 'heavy water' into Dr. E.'s mouth and then dumps in some type of granulated powder, which results in a bubbly, carbonated foam. Dr. F. grabs a straw and begins drinking from Dr. E.'s mouth. "The best thing is... it tastes like 'Peach-Flo Fizz"! After the experiment is pronounced a failure, Dr. E. sends Joel and the Bots the movie.
Host Segments:
Host 1: It's time for Joel to give the Bots their regular 'lessons in humanity'. "Rule #1: Always say 'please' and 'thank you', even if you don't mean it!" "Lesson #2: Always call your Mom (or in your case Servo, Me) every weekend!" "Rule #3: Never let them see you sweat!"
Host 2: It's a big day on the 'Satellite of Love'. The 1,000th fan club member has registered: Miss Gidget Howell! Joel reads her fan club letter and informs her that she will be receiving... a 'Demon Dog' hat (just like the type seen in the show's opening sequence)!
Host 3: Servo reads a fan letter. The spelling is quite poor, prompting Servo to state "Bobby must be a freshman at the University of Minnesota!"
End: Joel reads a 'heart-felt' letter from a fan, comparing MST3K to other long forgotten children's shows of the past. (It's almost enough to make one tear-up and grab a 'kleenex'!)
Items of Note:
~ The 'Cold Fusion' skit is just sick and weird, but funny!
~ Both Weinstein and Beaulieu (Dr's E. and F.) can be seen trying really hard to make it through the opening sequence without laughing.
~ The opening segment is one of few that doesn't feature Joel or the Bots.
Personal Notes:
~ Lee majors is probably best know as Col. Steve Austin on the TV series "The Six Million Dollar Man".
~ Burgess Meredith is probably best remembered as Mickey Goldmill from the "Rocky" series of films, and as TV Batman's arch-nemesis, "The Penguin".
The 'Riffs':
~
(Joel): "Chris Makepeace looks like he combed his hair with an iron!"
(Servo): "Yeah. A 5 iron!"
~
(Servo, referring to the oil company Exxon): "Our gas contains
no sea water!"
~
(Joel): "He must have had an Erector set."
(Servo): "Not since his wife died!"
~
(Movie dialogue): "Order that idiot back!"
(Joel): "Which idiot?"
(Crow): "There's so many!"
Pop culture references ranging from The Outer Limits TV series, Grateful Dead and Erich Von Danieken to Beatlemania, My Mother the Car and Salem cigarettes, this episode struggles simply from the ludicrious subject matter of the film. Tolerable, but just.
