Oh where to begin, This movie suppoesdly has been in the back James Cameron's, the self proclaimed king of the world, head for that last 14 years. At least according to him. Has it lived up to the hype? Was my Cerebral cortex overloaded as I was "transported to a whole a new world?" Yes! and No! I don't think I have ever been so conflicted about a movie just on movie making terms. Technically, Avatar is an amazing piece of work. Visually stunning in ever way, and the closest thing to real CGI when it come to SCI FI that I have ever seen. Everything about Pandora looks amazing real, istic especially with the 3D shades on. Props to the tech crew for this movie, they have changed the way films shall be viewed forever. But I am still conflicted on whether I could call this a great movie. Why? Well for a story that has been etchedin Cameron brain for the last 14 years, it sure as hell didn't translate that good into a Scripted. The dialogue and story in Avatar, is not bad, but not good, in fact its pretty average and borrows a lot from other films. And character development, well there really isn't much. Now normally because this is a SCI-FI special effects I would let this slide, but this is a James Cameron Movie, I went into theater expecting greatness on all levels, but he skipped one of the biggest Levels of them all. Does that mean that it isn't worth your time? Hell no. Pandora is amazing place to visit, and if I had the money I would visit a second time. I just wished the story was worked on as much as the special effects. Over 4 out 5, or B Good: Amazing Special effects. Bad: Script, too campy Ugly: Weaver as a blue alien just not my cup of tea

Peggy and I saw Avatar this afternoon at a local cineplex without 3D. We both really liked it and we will probably spring for a showing at a 3D theater. I thought the story was good and the visuals stunning. Some may take fault for painting the Na'vi as a parallel to Native Americans (heck, they wore war paint and whooped as they rode/flew into battle). But, I can forgive Cameron's attempt to portray this as an interstellar Dances With Wolves and was otherwise moved and entertained by the the film.

Pamp's movie review
I just saw it in 3D at a fairly large sized crowd. The 3D glasses were annoying but once the movie started, I forgot about them.
The effects were out of this world. This made all the movies I've seen up to this day obsolete. It truly changed movies, at least from the technical point of view.
The story and acting was strong. The plot was predictable to a certain extent.
The last forty minutes of the movie was out of this world. I was just astounded. It was amazing.
8.9/10
The audience was all silenced, which I was also surprised to find. I always see kids getting up in the middle of a film being bored and whatnot, but everyone stayed in their seats.

I was able to see Avatar in 3D this past weekend and was very pleased with the movie. I've seen a lot of people complaining about the story but I liked the simple, borrowed story-line. It allowed me to focus more on the astounding world that James Cameron had created. I'd love to visit there! As for the 3D, I was so grateful that it didn't have any gimmicks. The 3D was there just to give the visuals depth. There wasn't anything being thrown at you. A long time ago I thought how nice it would be to see a movie shot in 3D that didn't use any gimmicks. I finally saw one! For all those who are in the "I'll just wait until it comes to DVD crowd", don't do it! You've got to see this on the big screen.

Stunning!!! Absolutely, mindbogglingly Stunning!!! Yes, the story is a bit predictable and the main protagonists is pretty stereotypical, but the movie is so visually stunning that it literally takes you to another world unlike anything you have seen. James Cameron has achieved an incredibly detailed 3D world that you lose yourself in, you find yourself just alive in this world and makes you wish you could live there. I will need a couple more theater viewings to fully take this film in because it just wont be the same at home. It will lose some of its grand splendor when translated to the 2D, small screen of home theater. Dont miss out people, take this film in at a theater in 3D, IMAX if possible, you will be blown away. Its definitely an experience rather than a simple movie.

Just saw it today. Not sure what I can say that hasn't already been said... Cameron has taken some grief from some who are tired of his self-congratulatory attitude. He pats himself on the back for what he has created. I say that no one is more deserving of that right! This film was incredible to view. It is the modern equivalent of Star Wars. We have truly begun the era of film making that if you can write it, you can make it. Pandora was eye candy to the extreme. I've never seen better VFX and I'm thinking I won't for some time. I remember when Jurassic Park came out and how believable the dinosaurs where. Avatar makes those dino's look like claymation. The story was as much of a retread as you can get, there is no arguing that. This movie was made for the VFX and for once, I don't mind. Cameron said he had waited till the technology was right, and bless him for it!! (Lucas said this same thing before he bastardized Star Wars so be on the look out for the super-duper-special-"I'm not going to make a sequel"-sequel ) This movie could have been made 5 or 10 years ago, but it would have suffered for it. The VFX evolution has taken another step. For better or worse remains to be seen. (And this was after only seeing the 2d!!)

I think a 3D viewing is a must, it gives Pandora so much depth and life.
The visuals overshadowed the story so much that like Timelord said, I really didn't mind.

I think I have too much of a left eye dominance thing going. I'm afraid I'd waste my money on a 3 hour fuzz-fest.

It is rather comical to see reviews of this (not so much here, but a little bit) lamenting the story of Avatar, when Cameron himself he really didn't care about the story, hence why he used one that is so well known. His focus on this movie was to push the cutting edge special effects to the screen. To get people back into the movie theaters and show people that yes, you can still be surprised by what you can see.
He's like the polar opposite of Lucas the Hutt.

It's VERY clear that Cameron didn't care about the story. It's why Avatar won't be on my top 10 list this year. However, there's absolutely no denying that he's made an achievement in visuals. I think the main reason why even people who hated the story (like me) are still telling everyone to go see it and not taking shots at Cameron is because we all still think he's still got magic left.
I wasn't a complete fan of the ride Cameron took me on, but I have no problem saying that I'll be there on day one for his next film. If he can get back to the storytelling magic he had from the late 80's to early 90's and add those visuals, there will be no denying that he's one of the most talented filmmakers of his generation. The main thing is that while I had problems with Avatar, I didn't have the feeling I had after walking out of the SW prequels. I walked out thinking, "Imagine what he could accomplish with a solid script!"
